Cartographic services on-line: map search, distance measurement, browsing photos connected with the selected point of the Earth.
Yandex.Maps
Yandex. Maps is a cartographical service provided by Yandex.ru. The satellite map of the Earth is laid out here. You may use address search around Russia, Ukraine and some other countries. However the world`s map is depicted not very well, and, for example, if you want to find a street in a small town in Siberia you are likely to fail to do it. What is more, you can lay the route and measure the distance between any two points on the map.
Closely connected with Yandex.Maps service Yandex.Traffic provides information about traffic jams in three Russian cities: Moscow, Sankt-Petersburg and Yekaterinburg and also in Kievt, the Ukrainian capital .
Google Maps
Google Maps is a free web mapping service application and technology provided by Google. It offers street maps and satellite images of the world. Two more services such as Business Book and Motor road map are integrated into Google Maps. They cover many urban areas in the USA, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong , China, Great Britain, Ireland and some areas in Europe, including some Russian cities. A related product is Google Earth, a stand-alone program for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, SymbianOS, and iPhone OS which offers more globe-viewing features, including showing polar areas. It displays satellite images of varying resolution of the Earth’s surface, allowing users to visually see things like cities and houses looking perpendicularly down or at an oblique angle, with perspective. The degree of resolution available is based somewhat on the points of interest and popularity, but most land (except for some islands) is covered in at least 15 meters of resolution. Google Earth allows users to search for addresses in some countries, enter coordinates or simply use a mouse to browse to a location. Google Maps are connected with Wikipedia and Panoramio.com so users have an opportunity to see geographically-related photos on Panoramio and read articles on Wikipedia.
WikiMapia
WikiMapia is an online map and satellite imaging resource that combines Google Maps with a wiki system. Its aim is to describe the whole world. Wikimapia allows users to add information in the form of a note by marking out a polygon around the location and then providing a default language, title, description and one or more categories. What is more, users can add up to seven pictures to each tag and embedded YouTube videos, which all appear on the place’s information window. The interface allows users to specify the size of the road (major highway, side street, dirt road, etc.), to indicate one-way streets, and to provide a brief description. It also allows users to describe intersections and tunnels. The website was founded by two Russian Internet entrepreneurs Alexandre Koriakine and Evgeniy Saveliev on May 24, 2006.
Panoramio
Panoramio is a geolocation oriented photo sharing website. It is connected with Google Maps. It allows to clear up location of the objects on the photos added by users all over the world and also to see photos of the area that depicted on the map. Some of the photos uploaded to the site can be accessed as a layer in Google Earth with new photos being added at the end of every month.
